How to DM Someone From a Class Page Without Being Awkward

Updated June 28, 2026

DMing someone from a class page can feel awkward because you technically do not know them yet. But everyone is in the same situation. Most people posting on a class page want other students to reach out. That is kind of the whole point. You do not need the perfect message. You just need to say something normal and give them something easy to respond to.

Start simple

The best first DM is usually short.

Example:

"Hey! I saw your post on the class page. I'm also going to ___ this fall and thought I'd reach out."

That is enough to start.

You do not need a huge intro or a paragraph about your life. Keep it casual.

Mention something from their post

This makes the message feel less random.

Examples:

"Hey! I saw your post and noticed you're also planning to major in business."

"Hey, I saw you're from New Jersey too. I'm going to ___ this fall."

"Hi! I saw your post and we seem like we're into a lot of the same stuff."

"Hey! I noticed you said you're interested in rushing. I'm thinking about it too."

This works because it gives them a clear reason you messaged.

Ask an easy question

Don't open with a huge roommate interview.

Start with something easy: "Have you picked a dorm yet?"

"Are you going to orientation?"

"Do you know anyone else going?"

"Are you looking for a roommate?"

"What made you choose ___?"

"Have you joined any group chats yet?"

Easy questions keep the conversation moving.

If you're interested in being roommates

If you think they could be a roommate match, do not make it intense right away.

Start normal: "Are you still looking for a roommate?"

Then if they say yes, you can ask more.

Good follow-up questions: "What dorms are you looking at?"

"What's your sleep schedule like?"

"Are you more social or chill?"

"Do you like keeping the room pretty clean?"

"Are you okay with people coming over?"

"Do you want to be close with your roommate or more just friendly?"

These are normal roommate questions. Just don't send all of them at once like a survey.

Don't be too formal

This is not an email.

Bad:

"Hello, my name is Connor. I am reaching out in regard to your Class of 2030 post because I believe we may be compatible as roommates."

Better:

"Hey, I saw your post and thought we seemed pretty similar. Are you still looking for a roommate?"

Normal is better.

Don't be too intense

Avoid opening with: "Want to room together?"

"You seem perfect."

"Can we talk on FaceTime tonight?"

"Send me your housing ID."

"Are you clean? Do you party? What time do you sleep?"

That can feel like too much from someone they have never talked to.

Start with a real conversation first.

Easy DM examples

Here are some messages you can send: "Hey! I saw your post on the class page. I'm also going to ___ this fall and thought I'd reach out."

"Hi! I saw you're also majoring in bio. Are you excited for ___?"

"Hey, I noticed we're both from the same area. Do you know many people going yet?"

"Hey! Your post came up on the class page and we seem like we have similar interests. Are you still looking for a roommate?"

"Hi! I'm also trying to meet people before school starts. Have you joined any group chats?"

"Hey! I saw you like working out and going to games. I'm trying to meet people too, so I figured I'd say hi."

If they don't answer

Do not take it personally.

People miss DMs. Some people are busy. Some people do not check message requests. Some people already found a roommate.

You can send one follow-up if it feels normal, but do not keep pushing.

Example:

"Hey, just wanted to follow up in case this went to requests. No worries if not!"

After that, leave it.

If the conversation is going well

Once you've talked a little, it is normal to move to roommate questions.

You can say: "You seem cool. Would you want to talk more about housing?"

Or:

"Are you still looking for a roommate? I'd be down to compare what we're looking for."

If you both seem interested, a quick FaceTime or phone call can help. It is easier to tell if someone feels like a good fit when you actually talk.

Final tip

The least awkward DM is usually the most normal one.

Say where you saw them, mention something you have in common, ask one easy question, and see where it goes.

Everyone is trying to meet people. You're not being weird for reaching out.
